Taking Advantage of a Bad Situation

The letter, written to federal Public Safety Minister Bill Blair by anti-gun groups Canadian Doctors for Protection From Guns, PolySeSouvient, the Coalition for Gun Control and Danforth Families for Safe Communities reads what we’ve all read before, “ban military-style assault weapons”. The letter comes less than 24 hours after a psychotic rampage in Nova Scotia left many dead. Of course, at the time of the letter, it wasn’t even known how many were dead, nor what type(s) of firearm(s) was used but the anti-gun lobby recognized the opportunity and jumped in with both feet. Then both Trudeau and Blair, politicizing the tragic event, had their chance and they too jumped in reaffirming their commitment to more gun control.

This is, on all accounts, the exploitation of a bad situation for personal gain, that gain being gun control for the anti-gun groups and political points for both Trudeau and Blair, which is seriously shameful.

“There have been far too many incidents of gun violence in our country and we are working hard to make sure that we put the measures in place that significantly reduce those incidents and keep people safe,” said Blair.

And Trudeau, “The tragedy in Nova Scotia reinforces and underlines how important it is to strengthen gun control in Canada.”

But one just needs to look at the UK where guns are strictly regulated to know that banning guns does not reduce crime. In fact, in the UK, knife crimes are now top priority and there’s talk that knives with “pointy ends” need to be abolished. This comes from UK churchmen, physicians, judges and lawmakers, including a Conservative Member of Parliament, Scott Mann, who said, “Every knife sold in the UK should have a GPS tracker fitted in the handle. It’s time we had a national database like we do with guns.”

Well-known animal-rights group PETA is also taking advantage of a bad situation. While most of the world is struggling through the coronavirus pandemic, PETA has turned it into an opportunity to profiteer from the misfortune of others. PETA recently announced they are investing in sheep and goat futures during the COVID-19 market slump saying, “We frequently buy the minimum number of shares necessary in clothing companies in order to attend annual meetings, liaise with shareholders, and influence management decisions from the inside.

“We’re heading to the boardroom to pressure retailers not to sell items that are devastating to the environment and that goats, sheep, and other animals suffered and died for.”

But it doesn’t end there. Animal Justice Canada, “a federally incorporated not-for-profit dedicated to advocating for the humane treatment of animals” is also taking advantage of the pandemic to further their cause.

The following are recent tweets from the group who are based out of Toronto.

The examples provided here are merely drops in the bucket to the extremes animal-rights activists, politicians, and anti-gun groups will stoop to further their agendas.

In honour of a legend

It is with great sadness to mention here that we lost one of the truly remarkable outdoorsmen this province has ever seen.

Jack Graham
I first met Jack Graham 20 years or more ago. I can’t remember exactly how or where we met, but he was one of those people you were glad to have known. He was a regular reader of Alberta Outdoorsmen and whenever we’d talk, I would always leave our conversation feeling better – Jack always wore an infectious smile.

Jack was a life member and past President of the Alberta Fish and Game Association, as well as a Director with the Canadian Wildlife Federation among the many other positions he held within our outdoor community. Many of you may have met Jack through his position as an official scorer of the Boone & Crockett Club. Jack was an outdoorsman through and through... and he will be sorely missed.
